Chlorophyll, Comparison & Contentment: What Fall Teaches Us About Letting Go
Fall is the season of change we can actually see. The light shifts, the air cools, and the trees remind us that letting go can be beautiful. Maybe that is why I love this time of year. It is grounding and honest. Things are slowing down, colors are fading, and yet it is stunning. But there is also something quietly challenging about this season: it invites reflection, which is not always comfortable. It is a chance to look at what we have been holding onto just to keep it together and to ask if it is still serving us. This week’s three Cs are a reminder that sometimes nature’s best advice is simply to let it fall.
Chlorophyll
Science tells us that when chlorophyll breaks down, it reveals the true colors that were hidden underneath the green: the golds, reds, and oranges that were always there. It makes me think about a client I met with recently. We were talking about what she wanted her home to feel like, not just look like, and she said she simply wanted to feel content when she walked in the door. Not proud of how it photographs, not ready-for-company-perfect, just content. We talked about how the goal is not a picture-perfect space; it is a home that exudes calm. For her, that meant fewer things on every surface, less mental clutter, and more time to enjoy the people in the space. And is that not what the trees are doing too? Letting go of what they no longer need to make room for rest and renewal. Maybe fall is not a loss of color. It is a reveal.
Comparison
As the world around us glows, comparison sneaks in: homes, holidays, even happiness. I will be the first to admit this one gets me. I run a business, and sometimes I scroll and see well-established entrepreneurs absolutely crushing it, and suddenly I am questioning everything from my templates to my entire career choice. It is not a good look, and it is also not real life. Maybe for you it is another parent who seems to have it all together, a friend climbing faster at work, or someone whose life just looks easier. Whatever it is, remember that we are often comparing our behind-the-scenes to someone else’s highlight reel. The trees are not out here competing for who changes brightest or fastest. They just do what they do, in their own time, at their own pace. They do not look sideways; they look up. So the next time that voice whispers that you are behind, try responding with: I am exactly where I am supposed to be.
Contentment
Contentment is not about everything being perfect; it is about recognizing what is already good. The messy porch, the uncarved pumpkins, the to-do list that is still too long, all of it can coexist with gratitude. It is noticing that the candle still smells good even if the counters are not clear. It is giving yourself credit for showing up, even when the day did not go as planned. It is realizing that you do not have to earn rest; you just have to stop long enough to feel it. Maybe this season is not about finding balance. Maybe it is about appreciating rhythm, the natural kind that reminds us that slowing down is not falling behind. It is just aligning with what matters.
Let Yourself Change Too
So as the leaves change and the air shifts, give yourself permission to do the same. Let go of what is not working, stop comparing your timeline, and lean into the beauty that is already here, even if it is a little messy. And if you are ready to clear the physical clutter that has been hiding your own true colors, that is exactly the kind of thing I love to help with. Let’s create space for what matters most this season.
